Products We Like

In our workshops, we talk about all the products listed below and how they can save both money and energy.  We are often asked which products we recommend and where they can be purchased — hence, this list!  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask:  info@solarodysseyinc.com.

Buy energy-saving products all in one place:

The Earth Aid Kit™ is a fully customizable collection of products that anyone can install to immediately achieve an appreciable improvement in energy efficiency. By carrying only superior products, Earth Aid Enterprises refutes the pernicious notion that a spartan existence is necessary to save energy and stop global warming.  Earth Aid Enterprises is committed to making these products available to consumers at prices below other outlets.  Throughout the Earth Aid Kit™ assembly process, the Earth Aid Enterprises website dynamically reports to consumers the precise, quantifiable energy and environmental benefit of their Earth Aid Kit™.  Click on the logo Earth Aid logo to be taken to their site.

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs:

eLightBulbs has been selling light bulbs locally since 1951, and online since 1996.  With over 30,000 light bulbs available and over 300,000 satisfied customers, eLightBulbs has become the highest rated light bulb company online.  Stop by eLightBulbs.com and you’ll find what you’re looking for.  Solar Odyssey customers enter discount code “blair10″ to qualify for a 10% discount!

Surge Protectors:

These are widely available and can be purchased at any local hardware store and sometimes at the grocery or drug store, as well.

Programmable Thermostats:

Also widely available at any local hardware store – just make sure it has an “Energy Star” rating so that you realize the most savings.

Dual Flush Toilets:

There are dual flush inserts available now that can be used in a conventional toilet.  We have tested the EcoFlush Insert and found that it is a really good product.  You can order one for $45 online.

If you choose to replace the entire toilet, dual flush options can be found at Home Depot or Lowe’s for $250 – $350.

Rain Barrels:

Rain barrels are widely available online and prices range anywhere from $99 to $399, plus shipping.  Another less expensive option is to check for rain barrel workshops sponsored by your local government or civic association — search the net using “Rain Barrel Workshop sponsored by (insert your local town or county here)” and you will find local programs that offer rain barrels for as little as $25.  Rain barrels acquired this way will require some assembly, but it’s worth the effort!

Water Heater Blanket:

A blanket with an R10 insulation value will cost about $20 at Lowe’s or Home Depot.  Just be sure to follow the installation instructions carefully!

Clotheslines:

Unfortunately, many homeowner’s associations forbid clotheslines in their bylaws.  However, retractable and “rack style” clotheslines can be erected temporarily and usually are not in violation of any HOA rules.  Project Laundry List is a non-profit group working to make air-drying and cold-water washing acceptable and desirable as simple and effective ways to save energy.  You can purchase indoor or outdoor lines - and support the non-profit effort - from Project Laundry List at: http://www.laundrylist.org/

Urban Composters:

The evirocycle model is great for urban suburban settings.  Best price we could find, after an extended search for the best deal, was $139 (+$10 shipping) at: http://www.compostbins.com/

Planting Trees:

Planting a tree is an excellent way to support the environment.  Consider purchasing a tree as a wedding gift or to celebrate the birth of a baby.  If you’d rather not do the digging yourself, support organizations that do the planting for you.  American Forests, recently awarded four stars for fiscal management from Charity Navigator, will plant a tree for $1.  Visit them at:  http://www.americanforests.org/
