This article on car maintenance from Go Green, Live Rich is a great way to save some money, and reduce your impact on the environment at the same time.
Maintenance Matters
No matter what car you drive, maintaining it so that it’s running at its highest efficiency is just common sense–the kind of sense that adds up to dollars.
- Keep your tires properly inflated. Having your tires inflated to the right pressure can increase your mpg by up to 3 percent, saving you up to 10 cents per gallon of fuel.
- Don’t haul around unnecessary weight. What are you storing in your trunk? Unnecessary cargo weighs down your car and reduces your mpg.
- Get a tune-up. Installing a clean air filter protects your engine and can increase your fuel economy by up to 10 percent, which translates to as much as 32 cents per gallon of gasoline.
- Don’t drive like a maniac. Aggressive acceleration and braking can reduce your highway mileage by a third. Driving over 60 mph can cost you 20 cents per gallon on gas for ever 5 mph increase.
